1. Have a comprehensive eye exam. Annual exams are important to detect signs of vision problems and eye diseases, many of which have no early warning signs.
2. Know your family eye health history. Glaucoma and macular degeneration are often hereditary and evidence shows that genetics plays a role in common vision problems including strabismus (cross-eyes), amblyopia (lazy eye), myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (…farsightedness) and astigmatism.
3. Always wear sunglasses when outdoors. To be effective, sunglasses must block 99-100% of both UVA and UVB light.
4. Include in your diet eye healthy foods like egg yolks, green leafy vegetables, and fleshy fish such as tuna and salmon.
5. Properly wear your contact lenses. Do not wear contact lenses longer than prescribed; sleep only in lenses that are specifically designed for continuous wear.
6. Practice the 20-20-20 rule. For every 20 minutes you spend looking at a computer screen, look up for 20 seconds at something 20 feet away giving eye muscles a chance to relax.
