November 14 is World Diabetes Day
Are you one of the 30 million Americans with diabetes?
Did you know that diabetes can permanently affect your vision?
Diabetes affects 371 million people worldwide.
Facts about diabetes and your eyes and vision:
• Diabetes is the leading cause of new cases of blindness in people ages 20 to 74 in the U.S.
• Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is the most common eye problem caused by diabetes
• Diabetic macular edema (DME) is a complication of DR
• Both are serious conditions that can cause problems with vision
What is DR?
DR occurs when too much blood sugar (glucose) damages the blood vessels in the retina. Damaged blood vessels can leak blood into the retina.
What is DME?
DME, a complication of DR, causes the macula to swell with fluid leaked from the damaged blood vessels. The macula is the central area of the retina and the most important area for sharp vision.
A dilated eye exam is the only way diabetics can detect changes in their eyes. If you have diabetes, it is critical to have a comprehensive, dilated eye exam at least once a year. After the exam, Dr. Tabak will forward a report to your primary care physician or endocrinologist.
